HELEN O’ GRADY INTERNATIONAL
SPEECH & DRAMA PROGRAMME
CURRICULUM DELIVERY GUIDELINE
YEAR 2016-17, TERM 1
The salient features of our International structured curriculum are as follows-
  1. Introductory activities - combine physical activity with spontaneous unstructured speech called ‘ad-libbing’.
  1. Structured Speech - incorporates elements of voice delivery techniques.
  1. Movement - incorporates the components of Creative Movement i.e. body, space, and weight awareness aimed at co-ordination of various parts of the body. Dance dramas are also performed using these movement skills.

  1. Improvisation - a play performed by children using all the above components of drama. This helps children to work together as a team and present a cohesive plot using the various techniques of stage craft.
  1. Snippets and mini-scripts - individual acts motivating the students to shed their inhibitions and respond confidently to any given situation.
  1. Conclusion - a high-energy activity coupled with unstructured speech to bring the fun filled class to a close!
Please find attached the Description of the Curriculum for Term 1 for the Academic Year 2016-2017.

 LOWER PRIMARY, TERM 1
Class 1&2
Introductory Activities - These are a combination of physical and mental activity. During these activities children are motivated to visualize a given situation using their imagination. They are encouraged to focus on the details of an imaginary scene and then describe it to the teacher in their own words. The Multiple Sentence Flow technique is used to develop unstructured speech.
Manners and Etiquette – This segment deals with teaching the kids good manners, correct posture and grooming. They are taught real-life skills to behave appropriately in whatever situation they face.
Structured Speech –comprises of exercises for Projection, Forward Placing, Lip & Tongue Exercises, Jaw Exercises and Articulation. The children are made to repeat dialogues emphasizing these voice delivery techniques.
Under Speech, there are various sub-sections as well:
  • RECITATION- In this segment, depending on the age-group, famous poems are taught to the kids, keeping in mind the various contents of the Speech section of the Programme. This is to encourage kids to speak properly, clearly and uninhibitedly in front of an audience.
Movement - has exercises like stretch, curl and twist, even-uneven rhythm, syncopation etc. They are taught concepts of space awareness, time awareness etc. through specially designed exercises. Knowledge of the different levels used in drama are also incorporated. Music is used for this segment. In every fourth lesson, children perform a dance drama which is done to music using body movements and without the use of any spoken dialogues.
Whole Class Improvisations- In Term 1, there are various plays performed, namely, Timothy Loses a Tooth! , Whose Idea was it?, The Flying Carpet, Return to Planet Ergo, Watch Out! It’s a Snake! , The Big Orange Paper Cruncher, Rodiland the Cat, The Wide Eyed Dinosaur.
Each lesson ends on a high note with a concluding activity incorporating vocal projection.
